50 Cent drives them wild

September 6, 2004

By Lucky Sindane

WHEN US rapper 50 Cent - the headline act for this year's Arts Alive International Festival - strode off stage at the end of his high-energy performance at the Northgate Dome on Saturday night, he left the hyped-up crowd screaming for more.

For more than an hour the enigmatic, dynamic son of the urban ghettos raged his way through his well-known repertoire with G-Unit member Lloyd Banks.

The evening was one of heightened emotions and 50 Cent, with Banks, rapped through top popular hits 'In Da Club', 'Wanksta', '21 Questions' and 'Many Men', as well as a few songs from G-Unit's album - including 'Stunt 101' and 'Beg for Mercy'.

As each song reached its visual and auditory climax, fireworks exploded and the entranced audience yelled their approval. "50 Cent is the man," Kagiso Mojapelo from Randburg raved. "I've never seen anyone perform like this in my life."

Wearing his traditional white bandana underneath a black New York City cap, black baggy jeans and a black G-Unit t-shirt, 50 Cent played to the audience. In a somewhat X-rated performance, he gyrated suggestively, removed his t-shirt, and showed off his well-sculpted muscles, driving female fans wild.

A sell-out show, the Dome was packed with young people dressed to impress and raring to party and music throbbed from minibus taxis full of revellers even before the show began.

Supporting the American superstar were major South African kwaito performers Zola, Kabelo and Brown Dash, and Pitch Black Afro, who made a surprise appearance, had the crowd roaring for encores.

Those without tickets for the show refused to miss out. They sat outside, playing the latest hits and imbibing with friends.
