SEVEN members of the defunct New National Party (NNP) joined the ruling African National Congress (ANC) during the two-week floor-crossing period that ended on Wednesday, 15 September.
Another NNP councillor, Gregory Mills, joined the Independent Democrats whilst Kim Lugli switched her allegiance from the Christian Democratic Party to the Democratic Alliance.
Former NNP members who have signed up with the ANC are Randchod Daya, Abdool Essop, Michiel Lombard, Cathy Seefort, George Taylor, Willem Van Der Schyf and Lucas Viljoen.
According to figures released by the Independent Electoral Commission, these developments have increased the number of ANC councillors in the city to 139 in the 217-seat chamber, whilst the DA remains the official opposition with 60 councillors.
The Inkatha Freedom Party retains its eight members, followed by the Pan Africanist Congress which has three members in the council.
The Christian Democratic Party has been left with two members, whilst the African Christian Democratic Party, the United Democratic Movement, the Independent Democrats and the Black Consciousness Forum have one councillor each. Japhta Lekgeto remains the only independent councillor in the city.
