City to assist disadvantaged students

October 5, 2004

By Tammy O'Reilly

THE City of Johannesburg is looking to provide financial backing to about 100 deserving full-time undergraduates for the 2005 academic year and is calling for application from people interested in higher education.

The bursary scheme was started in 2002 to assist disadvantaged students who wished to pursue tertiary level education, but faced financial difficulty. For the first year there was just 15 beneficiaries, the following year 50 bursaries were handed out, and this year twice that amount of students is expected to benefit.

Bursaries of up to R10 000 each are up for grabs and the money will go towards tuition fees, prescribed books and/or course materials. The funds will be paid directly to the institution where the studies are being pursued. Because bursaries are granted on an annual basis, the bursary holder will have to re-apply every year.

Applicants from all race groups in the various communities of Johannesburg are invited to submit the completed forms (available here in Acrobat format) by October 15.

Applicants must be able to prove that they are registered or about to register at a further or higher education institution for full time undergraduate studies towards a National Qualifications Framework (NQF) recognised qualification.

Preference shall be given to candidates who intend pursuing full time undergraduate studies in Logistics, Town Planning, Engineering, Commerce, Political Sciences and Environmental Health. Completed application forms addressed to the Deputy-Director: Training, Development & Equity, Corporate Human Resources, are to reach the city before 15 October:

  • By post: Deputy-Director: Training, Development & Equity, Corporate Human Resources, P.O. Box 1049, Johannesburg 2002
  • By hand: Reception Area A-Block, Metropolitan Centre, 158 Loveday Street, Braamfontein.
  • Please note that no late applications will be considered and if you haven't been contacted regarding the bursary before November 30, your application has been unsuccessful.
