Growing a passion for parks

October 22, 2004

JOHANNESBURG City Parks employees were rewarded for their "excellent service" and presented with special certificates by managing director, Luther Williamson, as he toured the various public open spaces on Tuesday, 19 October.

This was the second year that the "MD's Achievers' Awards" were handed out.

Williamson and other City Parks officials visited nine depots around Joburg - on a mission to meet selected fieldworkers and commend them on their outstanding performances.

"This is our way, as management, to say thank you to our fieldworkers for their brilliant work and praise them for their excellent service delivery to the public," Williamson said.

Some 63 workers were given certificates, a special black-and-gold cap and a black carrybag inscribed with "MD's Achiever" in gold.

Williamson praised the workers for the extra efforts that they had made, ranging from good site maintenance, excellent site decorations and setting professional standards.

The Achievers' Tour bus started the day at Rhodes Park, then travelled to the other reserves and finished off at Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve, far south of the city centre.

Here Williamson commended workers for their efforts in maintaining the reserve.

"Thank you for the excellent job you are doing and keep it up," Williamson told a group of Klipriviersberg nature reserve workers dressed in green overalls.

Klipriviersberg worker, Julius Mafifi, said: "This means a lot to me to be recognised as an MD Achiever - it's an unexplainable good feeling."

The managing director said he hoped that next year's incentives would be bigger - "maybe a weekend holiday trip for two".

Williamson said that since its inception in 2003, the annual tour had made a positive contribution both for the public and for the company.

"This tour motivates employees to be more passionate about their jobs, which benefits the public because passionate employees are sure to provide good service delivery to the public", said Williamson.
