Musical fireworks
for Roodepoort

October 15, 2004

By Bafana Nzimande

THE audience at the Promenade Favourites Concert can expect musical fireworks when violinist Miroslav Chakaryan performs with the Sasol Pro Musica Orchestra on Sunday.

The concert, at the Pro Musica Theatre in Roodepoort on 17 October, is set to mesmerise music lovers with 11 orchestral classics. "We have chosen the best 11 classics that will definitely delight music lovers," says Nico Dreyer of the Pro Musica Theatre.

The repertoire, performed under the baton of Weiss Doubell, includes Voices of Spring by Johann Strauss and the Peer Gynt Suite no.1 by Edvard Grieg.

Bulgarian-born violinist Chakaryan will be the soloist for the concert.

"Chakaryan and Doubell are both very talented artists and with these two on the same stage the audience can expect fireworks," Dreyer says.

Chakaryan made his first public appearance at the age of nine, playing concertos by Vivaldi and Bach. During his career Chakaryan has toured the world with the best Bulgarian symphony orchestras and chamber music ensembles.

He is now based in South Africa and is at present concertmaster of the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra and of the Sasol Pro Musica Orchestra.

Maestro conductor Doubell is the recipient of numerous awards, including a special Vita Award for his contribution to South African music.

Doubell was instrumental in establishing the Sasol Pro Musica Orchestra in 1984 and has been its music director and principal conductor for the past 20 years.

"Music lovers should get their tickets as soon as possible, because they cannot afford to miss this historical concert," Dreyer says. Students, scholars and pensioners will be able to get a 25 percent discount off the price of the tickets.

The concert starts at 3.30pm on Sunday, 17 October and tickets are available at Computicket from R30, R60 and R90. For credit card bookings, call 011 672 2217.

Two other performances of the programme will take place: at the Johannes Stegmann Theatre in Secunda on Saturday, 23 October and the Etienne Rousseau Theatre in Sasolburg on Sunday, 24 October.

"We are trying to accommodate as many people as possible, which is why the concert will be staged in three theatres," says Dreyer, adding: "But we first had to hold it right here at home, so Johannesburg will be our first venue."
