IT'S no wonder that the City of Johannesburg has appointed Connie Molusi chairperson of the Johannesburg Tourism Company (JTC) - he has a sound background in communications and is the holder of several major directorships.
The position at JTC became vacant earlier this year following the death of Aggrey Klaaste.
A journalist by profession, Molusi joined the public sector in 1995 as the public relations officer to the then minister for posts, telecommunications and broadcasting Jay Naidoo.
Molusi later moved on to become chief director of communications in the department of communications before joining Johnnic Communication as director in 2000.
In a statement released by the City, Molusi said he was looking forward to the challenges of developing tourism in Johannesburg.
"I have always believed in community work and I think this is one way I can continue my community service. And although this is a new area of work for me, really, this is a very exciting time for tourism especially with the City's turnaround grabbing attention around the world."
He noted that a particular challenge would be to harness the many tourism opportunities the 2010 soccer World Cup would present.
"We felt that Molusi's broad experience in government and the media would enhance his ability to meet council's needs while growing the public-private sector relationships with the City's tourism stakeholders," commented Parks Tau, councillor responsible for the City's finance and economic development unit.
