WITH R50 000 at stake for the first across the finish line in the 13th Old Mutual Soweto Marathon on Sunday, top contenders powered their way around the course, taking little time to take in the historic sites.
Rustenburg-based athlete Mabotili Lebopo, of the Mr Price team, showed his strength by running off a tough single lapper through the streets of Soweto in 2:18:05 to claim the top spot.
But it was mixed feelings for the 30-year-old Lesotho-born runner: after crossing the finish line his coach informed him that his one-month-old daughter, Relebohile, had been rushed to hospital with a heart complaint.
"I feel good about my win but I'm very worried about my daughter," Lebopo said. "She is still so small. I will be going to Maseru tomorrow to be with my family."
In the women's category, defending champion Charne Rademeyer, of LNAC, became the third person to pull off a double win, running most of the race unchallenged and finishing in a time of 2:48:32.
A total of 3 500 runners from across the country took part in the event, which has become known as the People's Race.
The annual race is now the richest standard marathon in the country.
The route was changed this year to celebrate South Africa's 10 years' of democracy, taking in historic sites such as former president Nelson Mandela's old house in Vilakazi Street.
