WITH the construction of the biggest mall in Soweto already at an advanced stage, developers have revealed the mall's branding and corporate identity.
Constructors Greenwold Property Development and Roux Property Development unveiled the new logo for the Protea Gardens Mall at a ceremony on Wednesday 24 November.
The colourful symbol is made up four coils of purple, pink, green and orange, pointing in different directions. "The symbol represents not only the diversity and different mix of people and cultures in and around Soweto, but is also representative of the growth that has taken place in all directions," said Jean Groenewald, managing director of Greenwold Property.
Situated on the corner of Old Potchefstroom Road and Alekhine Streets in Protea, completion of the R106-million mall is set for April 2005.
The Protea Gardens Mall can accommodate 77 stores and space has already been allocated for major retail and clothing stores, restaurants and banks.
"We have a whole bag of tenants, which creates a very nice vibe," Groenewald said.
"Soweto currently has a lack of retail stores and we feel that residents deserve to have access to big names like Checkers and Pick 'n Pay. There is also a strong focus on employment and, on completion, between 600 and 900 temporary and permanent jobs will be created," she added.
Officiating at the unveiling, Johannesburg Mayor, Amos Masondo, said he was delighted with the progress.
"As a City, we remain conscious of the challenges we face - and Soweto is not without its challenges. We are proud to facilitate such progress and will continue to dedicate ourselves to the upliftment of the people."
For the mall to be sustainable, a turnover of R20-million a month needs to be made, which means that more than 100 000 people must visit the mall each month.
Research currently shows that 97 percent of Soweto's disposable income is spent outside the township and it is hoped the new mall will encourage residents to spend their money within the area.
