WHEN 800 talented artists get together to spread the message of HIV and Aids awareness, you can be sure of one thing: it will be loud, clear and very flamboyant.
This is precisely what will happen at the When Life Happens festival, in Newtown from 25 November to World Aids Day on 1 December.
Dedicated to the celebration of life, the festival focuses on initiating and nurturing new ways of looking, thinking and talking about HIV and Aids.
With the involvement and contributions of approximately 800 artists from all sectors of society, the festival is the manifestation of the social responsibility of artists and their ability to act as an agent of social change through the medium of art.
"This is just one massive freebie. No one has paid for anything and all this is for the sake of finding new ways to address the issues surrounding HIV and Aids," says event co-ordinator, PJ Sabbagha.
Various venues around Newton - including Mary Fitzgerald Square, MuseuMAfricA, Dance Factory and Shivava Café - will host performances and exhibitions ranging from poetry, photography and visual art installations to contemporary and traditional dance, music, and theatre.
Those with an interest in contemporary urban youth culture can take in the sounds of hip-hop and kwaito, and watch live graffiti drawings and basketball games.
Music enthusiasts can catch the KAYAfm Positive Living concert at the Mary Fitzgerald Square on Sunday 28 November from 12am to 6pm. The line-up includes Percy The Twin, Jennifer Ferguson, Ayanda, Amajika and many others.
All performances and entry to the venues are free.
