THE Gauteng Department of Health's donation of three specially designed ambulances on Friday, 30 April, came as a very welcome boost for impoverished residents of Alexandra.
"There was only one ambulance operating in Alexandra; this will make a huge difference in the area. As time goes by these ambulances will operate in the greater Johannesburg," said Johannesburg Emergency Management Services media liaison officer, Malcolm Midgley, after the 3.0 litre diesel LDVs were formally handed over by Gauteng MEC Gwen Ramokgopa.
"The handover of the ambulances represents a new addition in the basket of community benefits that the Alexandra Renewal Project (ARP) is delivering to the people of Alexandra. It also represents opportunities to bring tangible improvement in the quality of life among the local population," said ARP project manager for health, Itumeleng Mahuma.
The ARP is a presidential project established in 2001 aimed at improving the quality of residents' lives residents.
"Health services play an important role in ensuring that the quality of life among members of the community across the board is elevated. We hope that with the help of these ambulances the mortality rate presently experienced by the health facility will be reduced significantly," said Mahuma.
