GA-MCHANGANI, a heart-rending yet hilarious portrayal of the life of a new Joburger, will run from 20 May to 13 June at the Laager Theatre in Newtown.
The play, which is written by Obed Baloyi and directed by Arthur Molepo, is a tale of an honest man, Mchangani, who comes from the wrong side of the tracks - at least as far as Joburg's black community is concerned.
Mchangani arrives in the city with high hopes for a better life. But he becomes the victim of his neighbours' prejudice and the butt of their practical jokes. He finds himself on the wrong side of the law and has to face false accusations and discrimination.
His dreams are shattered and his hopes end in tatters.
Ga-Mchangani is told with great comic talent and humour by a cast of seven. But, underlying the play's lighter side, is an exploration of the viciousness and the destructiveness of racial prejudice.
The main character, Mchangani, is played by Baloyi, a funny man and scriptwriter who won acclaim for this work, which played at the Market Theatre Laboratory Festival in 1999.
Ga-Mchangani runs from 20 May to 13 June at the Laager Theatre in Newtown. For more information, contact the theatre on 011 832 1641.
