A CRIME-PREVENTION operation carried out in Johannesburg's inner city has yielded positive results: the Inner City Task Force made a number of arrests and confiscated illegal substances on Saturday.
Operation Siyitholile - which was undertaken by the Inner City Regeneration Office, the South African Police Services, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department, Pikitup, the Department of Home Affairs and Wozani Security - went into action after the naming of the 2010 Soccer World Cup host.
With the help of the Morph touch machine, an identification device that contains a database of the fingerprints of wanted criminals, 116 arrests were made - from people wanted for murder, to those suspected of fraud, theft and common assault. Among them were 67 illegal immigrants.
About 4 500 people were searched at 74 checkpoints set up around the inner city.
Twenty-three roadblocks were set up in Hillbrow, Joubert Park, Berea and Yeoville, and 245 drivers had their vehicles searched and checked for roadworthiness.
Seventy-four buildings, pubs and taverns in the city were also checked for compliance with liquor, building, health and fire regulations. Five people were arrested for selling liquor without a licence and 1 500 (75Oml) bottles of beer were confiscated.
The operation is part of the city's regeneration initiative, which aims to improve the quality of life for all citizens.
