Pikitup rolls out
the wheelie bins

May 18, 2004

By Lebofsa Masha

PIKITUP'S roll-out of the 240-litre bins is nearing completion. And officials have reminded Johannesburg residents that there is a small cost attached to each new bin - and the service of removing it.

A bin itself costs R5,20 a month to rent, but a household's refuse-collection charges depend on the size of the property.

The price of waste removal ranges from R21,60 for an erf of 300m², to R70,65 for an erf larger than 2 000m².

Refuse collection from flats, townhouses and other domestic buildings will cost R38,20 a month. Informal structures - those used for human habitation but erected without approved building plans - will be charged R5 a month. Hostels, tertiary education institutions, schools, hospitals, orphanages, halls and buildings used for religious purposes will be charged R2,60 a month for each bin.

According to Pikitup, the official waste-management service provider of the City of Johannesburg, owners of residential properties that generate more than one bin of waste a week may get extra bins from Pikitup for R5,20 a month for each bin. There is also a service fee of R21,20 a bin.

Collection from business premises of refuse stored in containers will be charged according to volume - ranging from R91 for 1,75m³, to a maximum charge of R1 560 per lift. These charges will only apply to uncompacted waste.

Containers can also be rented from Pikitup for three days, at R30 a day.

Pikitup's tariffs for business premises are R144 a month for a 240-litre bin and R164 for a 100-litre bin. A levy of R5,20 and R34 a month will be charged for providing the bins.

Business refuse stored and collected in containers for compacted service will also be charged according to the size of the container. Amounts range from R366 a lift for 6m³ to R665,50 a lift for 11m³.

Compacted refuse slugs (from compaction units placed at shopping centres) not exceeding 35kg will cost R35,50 for every slug removed. Waste removal from food-handling premises - done five times a week - will cost R353 per bin a month for an 85-litre bin and R950 for a 240-litre bin.

The removal of the carcass of a small animal - such as a dog or cat - will cost R35. Taking away an animal the size of a sheep will cost R75, and the removal of the carcass of a large animal, such as a horse, will cost R220.

A standard fee of R150 will be levied for the collection and removal of uncontained refuse such as bulk refuse, garden refuse and builder's rubble. Refuse from special events will be charged at negotiated rates. A maximum fee of R64,40 will be charged for all special, hazardous, medical and infectious refuse

Pikitup says there are rubbish dumps around the city: Goudkoppies in Devland; Linbro Park in Sandton; Marie Louise in Roodeport; Robinson Deep in Turffontein; and Ennerdale in Lawley. At these sites the fee for 500kg of refuse, other than special industrial refuse, is R38,60. For 250kg of special industrial refuse the charge is R38,60. Prices differ after noon on Saturdays, on Sundays and on public holidays.

Soil or other material that could cover a refuse-disposal site will be accepted free.
