WOMAN'S place in the medical field has moved another reassuring notch, with the appointment of Dr Audrey Gule as head of Johannesburg's Emergency Management Services (EMS) - the third woman director in the department.
A former director in the Gauteng emergency medical and hospital services, Gule's appointment as chief of department was announced this month after the EMS position had been vacant for a year.
Described as a "no nonsense" woman, Gule has a reputation for problem-solving and serving the community. "She has good leadership qualities," said EMS media liaison officer, Malcolm Midgley, adding that Gule was familiar with "90 percent of the work that we do".
After graduating from medical school and serving her time as an intern, Gule has worked for the past nine years in various community medical services in Gauteng.
"The days of the emergency services being a man's world is disappearing. This appointment certainly proves that Joburg is leading the way in changing the services and perceptions of the EMS," Midgley said, pointing out that three of four directors in the EMS were women.
Midley said he had no doubt that Gule's appointment will strengthen the management team, presently headed up by Ina Cilliers (corporate services), David Tembe (operations), and Vicky Manyathi (acting director proactive services).
