THOUGH a decade of democracy is a good enough reason to celebrate, Newtown is taking it a step further by exhibiting the talented results of the new freedom afforded artists for the next three weeks.
"Many of the artists had a significant role in the democracy that our country enjoys today. Art will for many of us remain the one form of expression that will contribute to the preservation of our democracy in the next decade. We hope that Gauteng will continue to develop this industry and nurture original work for the future," said Karin Burrill, head of Community Arts Awareness for Gauteng.
Fittingly, the celebrations, which include dance, theatre and poetry workshops, will also create job opportunities in each of the five programmes.
The Market Theatre, MIDI Trust, Dance Umbrella, Craft Council South Africa and Write Associates present the celebrations, supported by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture.
The Market Theatre
- 8 April to 18 April: "Bergville Stories" by Duma Ndlovu, in the Barney Simon Theatre at 8pm. The audience is given a rare insight into the village life of the people of Bergville, through traditional stories.
- 12 to 18 April: "Devils Protest" by Kere Nyawo, in the Laager Theatre at 8pm. "Devils Protest" uses mime, dance, music and dialogue to tell a tale of conflict that plays out in heaven and hell and on earth.
- 19 April to 25 April: "Thokoza" by Dieketseng Mnisi, in the Laager Theatre at 8pm. This celebration of women and the roles they play as mothers, peacemakers, businesswomen … also deals with challenges faced by women, including abuse.
- 26 April to 2 May: "Mary … the Unfaithful Woman" by FNB Vita award winner Jullian Sekele Mokoto, in the Barney Simon Theatre at 8pm. "Mary … the Unfaithful Woman" is a poignant tale of love that depicts the battle of the sexes.
At the Dance Factory
The pick of the FNB Dance Umbrella is on from 23 April to 25 April at 2.30pm to 7.30pm. Tickets can be bought at Computicket or at the door for R40.
Music in Newtown
From 2 April to 25 April various soul sounds can be heard at Kippies, the Newtown Music Hall, Shivava, Nikki's and Horror Café. Among the musicians who will perform are the African Jazz Pioneers, Soul Brothers, Moses Khumalo, Tshepo Tshola and Jeff Maluleke.
Some events are free, others cost from R40 up.
Poetry
Poetry sessions will be held at Kippies on 10 April and the Windybrow Theatre on 3 April and 24 April.
