AS part of their centenary celebrations, the Johannesburg Zoo is encouraging visitors to go wild and shoot the animals - using cameras only.
During April the zoo will be holding a wildlife photographic competition, with a grand prize of a R1 000 photographic voucher. "Visitors are invited to enter the competition by submitting photos taken at the zoo," says Elmarie Loubser, general manager for marketing at the Johannesburg Zoo.
"We are also specifically inviting photographic schools to participate in this exciting contest."
Participants are not allowed to enter the animal enclosures to take the pictures.
The competition is divided into three categories - professional, semi professional, and children under 18 - and runs from the beginning of April to 30 April.
The best photograph stands a chance to win a grand prize of a R1 000 photographic voucher, while there will be two runner-ups in each category. "The winner can use the Kodak photographic voucher to purchase a new camera, develop pictures, or buy films and photo frames," says Senzo Ngcobo, Johannesburg Zoo marketing coordinator.
Other prizes include t-shirts, caps and a free membership to the zoo for a year.
Entry forms, available from the zoo cashiers, can be handed into the administration office, along with the R10 entry fee. Only one photograph is allowed per entry and terms and conditions apply.
For more information contact the zoo on 011 646 2000. The Johannesburg Zoo is situated on Upper Park Drive and Jan Smuts Avenue.
