ahead of banquet

March 18, 2004

By Tammy O'Reilly

SEVERAL roads in the Johannesburg CBD will be closed on Friday ahead of a civic banquet that will be taking place at the City Hall later in the evening.

Roads around the City Hall will be closed to traffic from 2pm until midnight on 19 March, according to the Johannesburg Development Agency.

The banquet forms part of the celebrations leading up to the official opening of the new Constitutional Court building in Braamfontein on Sunday - Human Rights Day.

Traffic will be allowed to move along Simmonds Street, but the following intersections on that road will be closed:

  • Simmonds Street and President Street
  • Simmonds Street and Market Street
The intersections at Harrison and Market streets, and Harrison and President streets will also be closed, as will the intersections of Loveday and President streets, and Loveday Street and Rissik Street.

Traffic will be diverted on to Market Street from the intersection of Rissik and Markets streets.

In addition, the Harry Hofmeyer parking arcade at the intersection of Simmonds and Harrison Street will be closed to casual parkers on the day, however those with long-term parking access cards will still be able to enter.

There will also be a strong security presence to curb the access of pedestrians to the central city areas.
