Ster-Kinekor reaches
out to Alex school

March 17, 2004

By Lucky Sindane

DROP off a teddy bear, or any other cuddly toy, at the Y Shoppe in The Zone in Rosebank any time today and collect two free movie tickets for this evening's premiere of Disney's Brother Bear.

The premiere takes place at the Ster-Kinekor complex at The Zone at 5.30pm.

All the toys will be donated to the Zenzeleni Primary School in Alexandra, many of whose pupils are from disadvantaged homes. "Many of the children go to school with empty stomachs and as a result they can't concentrate in class," said Ster-Kinekor's cooperative social investment manager, Wonda Morgenrood.

In response to an appeal from the school, Ster-Kinekor decided to organise the toy collection. "We had to come up with something," Morgenrood added.

Brother Bear is an animated epic tale of adventure in which a young boy, Kenai, magically transforms into a bear.

After a bear takes the life of his oldest brother, Kenai kills the animal in revenge and discovers that he has become a bear. Another brother - Denai - comes upon Kenai in bear form and, thinking it killed Kenai, vows revenge. Then brother hunts brother and Kenai's only hope for survival is to befriend his own worst enemy, in the form of a grizzly cub named Koda.

Kenai then journeys through the vast wilderness of North America, with a bunch of eccentric characters and along the way learns the real meaning of brotherhood.

The movie also has a sparkling soundtrack, including five songs specially written for Brother Bear by Academy Award winner Phil Collins.

According to Morgenrood, Ster-Kinekor also intends to host 250 children from Zenzeleni Primary School at a special showing of Brother Bear soon. "They will be given a ticket for the movie and a can of cool drink," she added.

"We are really concerned about these children," said Morgenrood, adding that representatives from Ster-Kinekor also planned to provide food for the children at the school.
