Jozi heralds a decade of environmental sustainability

June 3, 2004

By Bontle Moeng

STARTING with executive mayor Amos Masondo's State of Environment Report for the city on Friday, 4 June, Joburg is pulling out the stops to turn the next ten years into "A Decade of Sustainability, Our Environment, Our Future".

In an effort to publicise its importance to the future of the country, South Africa has incorporated World Environment Day, 5 June, into National Environment Week, and Friday is activism day in Joburg.

Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment, World Environment Day aims to encourage communities to become active supporters of sustainable and equitable living by improving their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.

To celebrate the annual event in Joburg, Masondo will report on progress since the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002, and a host of speakers at the Metro Centre in Braamfontein will address issues that raise awareness on environmental management.

The event, which begins at 9.30am, will see environmental experts making presentations on waste minimisation, recycling and re-use, water conservation, energy efficiency and biodiversity management'.

Key speakers will include representatives from Joburg Water, Joburg City Parks, City Power, Pikitup, Department of Agriculture Conservation Environment and Land Affairs and the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism.

At the Johannesburg Zoo, environmental activists will stage a more colourful demonstration to in an effort to preserve all life on earth. Publicising the theme 'Wanted! Sea and Oceans! Dead or Alive?', staff members and other demonstrators will dye their hair blue and wave placards to protest the destruction of the environment.

The demonstration starts at 11am and supporters must contact Martin-John van Rooyen on 011 646 2000 ext 262 to take part.

Also at the zoo, Central Lake, rejuvenated as an exotic environment spot as a result of Rand Water sponsorship, will be opened on Friday.
