Forum trains the lens on war-zone photographer

June 30, 2004

By Chandrea Gerber

SOUTH Photographs is holding its third South Documentary Forum at PhotoZA on Wednesday 30 June. It will involve a discussion about the life and work of Guy Tillim, an award-winning photographer.

Sean O'Toole, an independent journalist, will lead the discussion with Tillim, who has spent the past decade in the war zones of Africa, covering events in a way that is distinct and lyrical.

Tillim is the winner of the DaimlerChrysler award for photography.

His latest work, which focuses on Johannesburg's different cultures, will be on display.

"The discussion will be fairly open," says Graeme Williams, one of South's photographers, "and will delve into his influences and his work."

The very nature of the job forces photographers to work in isolation, says Williams. But this forum provides a platform for them to talk about their work, their influences, the choices they have made and their impact on their work.

The forum also gives them an opportunity to see what other photographers are doing and to get their input, he says.

The first documentary forum featured Paul Weinberg, one of South Africa's foremost photo-historians, and was so successful that a second was planned.

The next forum - which featured David Goldblatt, the founder of the Market Photography Workshop - was equally successful. This proved that there was a demand for such a forum.

South Photographs is a collective of about 23 local photographers. It also distributes Reuters pictures.

The third South Documentary Forum will be held at PhotoZA, in the upper level of Mutual Square, which is at 153 Oxford Road in Rosebank. It starts at 6:30pm on 30 July. Entry is R20 and a cash bar will be open.
