Meter readers make
a date with Joburg

July 9, 2004

By Lucky Sindane

CITY POWER has announced the dates on which electricity meters around Johannesburg will be read this year - and the names of the contractors hired for the task.

The City's electricity supply company has issued lists of suburbs and the dates on which meter readers will be visiting each of them.

"We have grouped the suburbs and each contractor is responsible for specific suburbs," says City Power's meter-reading supervisor, Ditshego Mampa.

The four contractors are ADD X, African Meter Reading Tech, Rubby Tad, and Global Meter Reading.

ADD X's area runs from Windsor Glen and Cresta, to Witkoppen and Dainfern; from Killarney and Yeoville, to Sandringham and Kew.

African Meter Reading will be responsible for a region that links Northcliff and Mayfair in the west to Braamfontein and Industria in the south, Sunninghill in the north and Alexandra in the east.

Rubby Tad covers the southern and western parts of the city such as Roodepoort, Florida and Helderkruin - as well Jeppestown, Eldorado Park and Glenvista.

Global Meter Reading's turf stretches from Village Deep, City and Suburban and Selby, to parts of Lenasia and Nancefield.

City Power has also issued a code of conduct for the meter readers. The code says meter readers should be clearly identifiable: they must be dressed in a uniform that has their company's logo on the front and City Power's logo on the back.

Readers should produce identity cards displaying the company's contact number.

Customers need not leave gates unlocked for the meter readers. "If you know you will not be at home on the date of your reading, you can call the contractor responsible for your area and make another arrangement," Mampa says.

The date of the reading is set, but not the time: meter readers may arrive any time of the day.

The contractors will also deliver notification of future meter-reading dates.

For meter-reading queries call your area's contractor or Joburg Connect on 375 5555. Complaints can be directed to City Power's metering manager on 011 490 7000.
