THE Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) and the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) on Tuesday reached an agreement on the shortlisting of new JMPD recruits, paving the way for new cadets to resume their training on Monday as scheduled.
Earlier in the week, Samwu had threatened to disrupt the training process, accusing metro police of overlooking candidates who had been jointly shortlisted by the union and the JMPD.
"In June last year, we agreed with the JMPD on a list of candidates who would be called up for interviews when a new round of recruitment comes up. To our surprise, the JMPD started the recruitment process from scratch, resulting in another group of people being shortlisted," charged Dumisani Langa, Samwu's Joburg secretary.
The candidates on the original list, said Langa, have already gone for fitness training and had their fingerprints taken. Langa admitted that Chris Ngcobo, the JMPD chief, had not been aware of the original list when he gave the go-ahead for new posts to be advertised.
Both parties have now reached an agreement which will see the two lists being consolidated into one and a new interviewing panel being established. Langa welcomed the agreement reached between the two parties, describing it as amicable.
City Manager Pascal Moloi, who mediated over the talks, said: "We all agreed that service delivery and safety of Johannesburg residents were a priority. It was in that spirit all parties ensured that this priority is not compromises".
Wayne Minnaar, spokesman for the JMPD, confirmed that all the candidates would be re-interviewed from Wednesday. Altogether, 250 cadets will be recruited and undergo training.
According to Minnaar, the JMPD received 24 000 applications when the posts were first advertised. To be admitted to the JMPD, a candidate must have passed matric, be a South African citizen and have a valid drivers licence.
