CONSUMERS making out cheques to the Johannesburg City Council can now do so in any of South Africa's 11 official languages and in a wider variety of account names.
Recently the council registered a number of account names with its bankers, Absa, to cater for the wide variety of designations that consumers write on their cheques.
Now any cheque made out to the City Council in the following names will be accepted: City of Johannesburg; City of Joburg; City of JHB; City of Johannesburg Council; City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Council; City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality; and City of Joburg Metropolitan Municipality.
Since changing banks in 2000, only two account names were acceptable when paying the metro - City of Johannesburg and City of Johannesburg Municipal Council.
"We found that people were making out cheques to the incorrect account name, which resulted in cheques being returned," said spokesperson for Johannesburg's Department of Finance and Economic Development, Virgil James. He added that consumers paying for a service should not incur unnecessary expenses by having their cheques returned because of this.
"Now residents can make a cheque out to the council in any of the 11 official languages and to a number of names as long as when it's translated it means exactly the same thing. We are giving everyone a chance to write out cheques in their preferred language."
James added that staff members throughout the City had been informed of the new policy to avoid any misunderstanding with consumers.
