THE City of Johannesburg's maps and property-related information can now be accessed through the Internet. Anyone needing data about Johannesburg, ranging from street addresses to ward boundaries, can now log on here.
After several months of hard work, the official Internet Mapping website (IMS) of Johannesburg's Corporate Geographic Information System department is now online.
Over the years, geographic information has been extremely valuable for the council in making decisions affecting the city. Now the information is available online and can be used from the desktop by developers planning infrastructure and services, students studying architecture or urban planning, and ratepayers who need to know more about their residential areas.
Clients can access various property-related information by either a limited free service or a subscription service. Subscribers to the site will be able to access more detailed information with additional data layers, full resolution aerial photography and additional customised map-making tools.
Subscribers can register and pay for the GIS service by:
- Registering online and paying a deposit via the ABSA credit card payment facility on the Internet; or
- Sending details to the Corporate GIS office on the 8th floor of the Metropolitan Centre in Braamfontein and making a direct payment into Corporate GIS account - ABSA Sandton Corporate Branch, branch code 637956, and account number 4054398227.
Corporate GIS department's Chris Wray, said Internet users could register as individuals or as a company. "A company registration allows multiple employees from the same company to log on and use the service, with the costs of transactions deducted from the company account", Wray said.
