Joburg's services go online

January 28, 2004

By Tshepiso Mogotsi

THE City of Johannesburg has established a new site to provide a fully integrated online service to residents.

According to the introduction on the web site, at, the e-service site "will make your contact with the City of Joburg much quicker, simpler and more convenient".

"Our goal is to help you cut down on paper work, save time and create an efficient connection between you and the City of Joburg," reads the introduction.

Joburg residents will be able to access their accounts, record their water and electricity meter readings, and link to the Corporate Geographic Information System, all via the Internet.

The site, live from today, has expanded on the existing Internet services, adding an access to the Regional Service Council, where residents can register businesses and enter and update address and contact details as well as submit monthly declarations. It now also offers residents the opportunity to view their current rates, water and electricity bills.

According to the City's department of information technology, e-government in Johannesburg will mean that all consumers should now be able to get their information and help they need efficiently - whether by going directly to the council's offices in Braamfontein, by phoning Joburg Connect on 011 375 5555, or via the Internet.

Access to the City's e-services is free of charge. All that is necessary is for the consumer to log on to the site and register.

The IT department's business analyst, Barry Brooke-Norris explained that the e-services site would offer access to the council's services, while the City of Johannesburg's web site www.joburg.org.za would continue to be the City's news wire and provide information about the council. "The e-services site can also be accessed from the Joburg web site."

Brooke-Norris said the IT department was in the process of creating a single sign-on facility, which would enable users to log on to all the different services without having to enter separate account numbers.
