Road works on M1
disrupt traffic

January 26, 2004

By Tshepiso Mogotsi

ROAD works on the Framton Bridge on the M1 near Gold Reef City are expected to be complete by the middle of March.

Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) workers have been busy replacing and repairing the bridge's expansion joint system since November, which has led to traffic jams during peak hours.

During a routine road inspection the JRA, the agency responsible for the city's road network design, regulation, maintenance and repair, noticed "severe wearing on one of the bridge's joints".

"We then decided to refurbish the whole system, since all the joints are the same age," JRA said in a statement. The system is 30 years old.

The repair works have caused major traffic disruptions as more than 100 000 motorists use that section of the road every day, with drivers reporting that their journeys now took 30 minutes longer to complete. Traffic flows in a northerly direction on to this section of the highway from Soweto and the Vaal, as well as traffic joining the highway from Pretoria and Germiston.

Repairs to the first of four bridge joints are expected to be complete by the weekend, Saturday 31 January.

The JRA apologised to road users and assured them the road would be clear by mid-March. Anyone with any queries can contact the JRA on 011 298 5135.
