THE City of Johannesburg is to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the accounts of all residents who have lodged complaints about the status of their accounts.
A team of experts has already been assembled to look into all account queries made by residents. Pascal Moloi, City Manager, said the team would review meter readings, billing and accounts delivery of all clients who have complained about their accounts.
The council announced in December that it is to clamp down on residents who have accumulated arrears on their accounts by cutting off their services in line with a new credit control strategy. But many residents have complained that they have been incorrectly billed and their attempts to take their complaints up with council have proved futile.
The revenue department will continue operating as usual whilst the investigation continues, Moloi said. "We hope to make announcements on the progress of investigation by the end of February."
According to Moloi, the city is owed R5, 9 billion by defaulting ratepayers. Accounts with arrears totalling R4, 6- billion have already been handed to attorneys for collection.
Moloi advised residents who have problems with their accounts to continue paying their accounts while their queries are being investigated.
