Fame comes to Joburg

January 23, 2004

By Bontle Moeng

JOHANNESBURG theatregoers no longer need to feel they have missed out on something special. The Johannesburg Civic Theatre has managed to find a two-week gap in its packed 2004 schedule, so Fame - The Musical is finally coming to town.

The vibrant joint Australian-South African show received standing ovations during its runs in both Pretoria and Cape Town, dazzling audiences with the depth of talent, with dynamic singing and dancing performances.

Now, from 7 February to 22 February at the Nelson Mandela Theatre, Johannesburg audiences will be able to experience the thrill that is Fame.

Set in New York's school for the performing arts, Fame follows the highs and lows of a groups of students from vastly different backgrounds who are thrown together by their common ambition - their search for fame. They not only have to learn their chosen crafts, they also have to face life's challenges, like prejudice and sexuality.

The stage show is based on the 1980s hit movie of the same name.

Produced by Hazel Feldman, Fame - The Musical features some of South Africa's top talent, with Mara Louw, as Miss Esther Sherman, Kate Normington as Miss Greta Bell, and Relebogile Mabotja as Mabel Washington, a dancer-turned-actress.

"Fame has been a resounding success and the demand and enthusiasm for the show by audiences of all ages is simply incredible," says Feldman.

"We are so excited the Civic Theatre found a couple of weeks for us to bring this truly sensational show to Johannesburg. Audiences in Pretoria and Cape Town have simply been blown away by the spirit and energy of each and every one of the performers," she adds.

Fame is presented by Cell C and produced by Showtime Management in association with Jacobsen Entertainment from Australia.

Cell C's chief commercial officer, Josè dos Santos, says he is delighted the show is returning to Gauteng. "For those of you that haven't yet seen Fame, you have one last opportunity to catch this vibrant and energetic display of talent."

Performances are at 8pm from Tuesdays to Thursdays, 5.30pm and 9pm on Fridays, 4.30pm and 8.30pm on Saturdays and at 3pm on Sundays. There are no shows on Mondays.

Prices for evening shows start at R95, with prices for matinee performances beginning at R75. Tickets are available from Computicket outlets and Computicket call centres on 084 915 8000 or 011 340 8000. For block bookings and special groups rates contact the Johannesburg Civic Theatre's VIP ticketing department on 011 887 6854.
