JOHANNESBURG WATER is to spend R2-million on a project to upgrade the collector sewer in Central Street, between Glenhove Road and Fourteenth Street, in Houghton.
Work has been scheduled to start on Monday 26 January and is expected to continue until June 2004. It involves increasing the size of the collector sewer and positioning a new pipe in the roadway. This means that an excavation 3m deep and 600m in length will have to be dug in the middle of the road, according to a Johannesburg Water (JW) statement.
JW, the city's water and sanitation service provider, has warned this will have an impact on road users. "But there will be no need to close the road off completely," said JW spokesperson Jameel Chand. Discussions have already taken place with the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and "all their requirements with regard to traffic impact" have been met.
"It is going to be an extremely testing project with regard to traffic, the community, the JRA and the corporate business environment around Central Street," said JW.
There are 9 500kms of sewer lines in Johannesburg and this infrastructure needs to be inspected and maintained regularly, said Chand. "The Central Street project is part of JW's proactive operations. We have carried out the inspections and are taking action to fix any problem areas."
Last year the City Council allocated JW R192-million from its 2003/04 budget for the upgrading of Johannesburg's water and sewerage infrastructure.
JW apologised for any inconvenience caused by this project and promised to ensure that DB Construction CC, the company appointed to position the new pipe, would complete the project on time.
