Tap water's as good as bottled
Joburgers drink water of world-class standards. The quality of the water supplied by the city's supplier, Rand Water, is measured against international standards, and "easily achieves those standards".

How Jo'burg plans to save that water
The water that flows from your taps has travelled hundreds of kilometres to get to you - and somewhere along that convoluted route, as much as 40% of it is believed to leak away. Which sounds alarming, in a country accustomed to drought. But the same happens every day, in every city in the world - and Johannesburg, a city not created on a river, compares rather well.

Rain for February
not above average

February 27, 2004

By Lucille Davie

AFTER a pretty wet week, Joburgers would be mistaken in thinking we've had a more than normal amount of rain this month. We haven't. We've had 90.6mm of rain so far this month; the normal average for February is 90mm.

There'll be a bit more rain this month - the Weather Bureau says there'll be more rain on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, which will probably put us a little above the average for the month. There'll be more rain on Monday and Tuesday, but the rest of the week will be dry.

January was also wet but not above the average for the month, 125mm - the Bureau recorded 123.1mm for January. This is perfectly normal for mid-summer, in fact, we normally get 60 percent of our summer rain in January and February, says the Bureau.

This comes on the back of a dry summer so far. In September we received 8.4mm of rain, against an average of 27mm. October was better with 72mm of rain, but still only half of October's average of 142mm. And November was alarmingly low: 42.4mm against the average of 117mm. December's rainfall was 56mm, about half of the average of 105mm.

The city has had a week of power cuts and motor car accidents, probably as a result of the wet conditions. Minister of Justice Penuell Maduna, driving in Bryanston on Monday night in very wet conditions, hit the kerb and rolled his car. He broke a leg, and had to undergo surgery.

Wayne Minnaar, communications and marketing chief for Metro Police, said that on Monday there were 126 accidents in Joburg, while on Tuesday he recorded 104 accidents. The average number of accidents is normally 20 a day.
