Soweto Festival:
bigger and better

THE Soweto Arts Festival is set to draw in the crowds again this year, with organisers promising something for everyone.

THE second annual Soweto Arts Festival - Tchova Xita Duma - promises to be bigger and better than before, with the inclusion of choral music, dance and theatre.

"We are trying to improve every year and our long-term goal is to host the Festival for a month, but this will depend on resources," says Festival organiser, Mbongiseni Mazibuko.

This year, however, the Festival will be held over five days, from 12 to 16 December.

The Festival was established last year to promote the arts via music, crafts, theatre, visual arts, the performing arts and film.

Highlights this year will include the two concerts, expected to attract thousands of music lovers. "Last year the music festival attracted 16 000 people and this year we are hoping for a far bigger attendance," says Mazibuko.

"We chose 'Mozambique' as the theme and we are going to have a Samora Machel lecture, delivered by Judge Albie Sachs," he adds Mozambican artist, Jeremias Ngwenya, has also been invited.

Chippa, MXO, Loyiso, Sliq Angel, Affinity, Mavo, Leanne, Mgedeza, Nutty, and Waxx & Fats are just some of the musical maestros set to entertain at the Oppenheimer Tower, Central Western Jabavu, on Sunday, 12 December.

Artists lined up for the concert at the Mofolo Cultural Bowl in Mofolo on Thursday, 16 December include Victor Ntoni, Jeremias Ngwenya, Bhekumuzi Luthuli, Phuzekhemisi and BY4.

All events are free. For more information, contact Johannesburg Concerts on 011 487 2818 or 082 712 5878.
