New loaders help Pikitup

EFFORTS to stamp out illegal dumping have been given a boost by the acquisition of two new state-of-the-art wheel loaders.

By Bafana Nzimande

IN its ongoing battle against illegal dumping, Pikitup has acquired two new state-of-the-art wheel loaders to pick up and remove rubbish.

The loaders, valued at R900 000, are capable of removing larger volumes of waste than the utility's smaller skidsteer loaders.

"We felt the need to purchase the two wheel loaders because we realised that our skidsteer loaders were not efficient enough to remove large volumes of illegal dumping," said Pikitup`s Communications Manager, Marius de Villiers.

The Volvo wheel loader L30Bs can remove approximately two tons of waste at a time.

"These new wheel loaders will help Pikitup deal effectively with the problem of illegal dumping," De Villiers added. The vehicles will be used specifically to crack down on illegal dumping sites with large waste volumes around Johannesburg.

The new loaders, together with Pikitup's other technologies, would strengthen the company's waste removal efforts, the utility said in a statement. They will also be used in the City's waste management's landfill sites.

The bright yellow loaders will improve Pikitup's service reliability and efficiency, according to De Villiers.

Pikitup drivers received free operator training and four obtained their wheel loader drivers' certificates.
