THE Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown will vibrate with pulsating rhythms from South Africa's jazz legends during the fourth annual Jazz on the Square festival on 16 December.

Presented by the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz and the Johannesburg Development Agency, the festival will take place on Thursday, the Day of Reconciliation, from noon till 8pm, free of charge.

"The star-studded line-up, made up of some of the very best South African musicians, will ensure an electrifying performance to round off the year," says Chief Executive Officer of T-Musicman, Peter Tladi.

Giants such as Moses Khumalo, McCoy Mrubatha, Mzwakhe Mbuli, Thandiswa Mazwai, Sipho Mabuse, Kunle, Bambata and Jeff Maluleka will all be performing.

"We believe that by bringing music and entertainment to Newtown we will help attract people back to the city and boost the business sector and the economic growth of Gauteng," says Standard Bank's Director of Group Sponsorship, Khanyi Mlambo.

"Besides the performances, there will also be a corporate marquee village and a variety of stalls, as is the norm with all our festivals," he adds.

While many free concerts are associated with poor quality and irresponsible organisation, "the issue of quality cannot be emphasised enough," Tladi promises.

With the involvement of the Johannesburg Development Agency over the past three years, "there has been a steady improvement in security and the provision of facilities such as sanitation, water and transport," he adds.
