ANYONE who happens to be in Newtown on Friday evening will be forgiven for thinking they're in Rio. That's because it's carnival time in Joburg - and an array of performers and artists will be meeting to discuss developing the city's own, unique, and very happening carnival.
The City of Johannesburg and the Gauteng Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture will host a carnival summit to showcase the skills of Joburg's talent, culminating in a mini carnival at MuseuMAfricA on Friday, 27 August, at 6pm.
The carnival summit will provide a platform for all performing arts and cultural performers to convene, network, lobby and showcase their talents and skills.
It will assess the existing carnival arts and cultural skills available in Joburg and surrounding areas, and identify the shortages in talent and skills needed to host a world-class carnival event.
The summit will serve to help the city and the province in creating a specific 'carnival' brand, by working with regions in the province, and gaining insight into what is needed to host a local carnival.
Participants, which will include performers and local artists from all of Johannesburg's regions, will discuss the way forward to developing Joburg's own carnival.
A unique database of talent available in the city will be developed, in preparation for a carnival that aims to attract thousands of local and international participants to Johannesburg.
The carnival summit will also launch the Gauteng Heritage celebrations, in anticipation of Heritage Day on Friday, 24 September.
The summit ends with a festival of colour, music and dance at MuseuMAfricA, 121 Bree Street, Newtown, on 27 August at 6pm, which is open to all.
