'Chicago' set to electrify Joburg stage August 25, 2004 By Chandrea Gerber BOOKINGS for the razzle dazzle Broadway hit "Chicago" are now open, as the internationally acclaimed musical heads to the Civic Theatre in April 2005 for what promises to be a sold-out season. Auditions, under the supervision of American director Scott Faris, choreographer Gary Chryst and British music supervisor Corin Buckeridge, are set for October. This team will mould the mainly South African cast and orchestra into performers capable of upholding the reputation of the show. Set in Chicago in the 1920s, "Chicago's" electric mood with sophisticated, sexy dancing, and sweet, saucy singing tells the tale of female prisoners who are transformed into provocative femme fatales who acquire star status through their publicity stunts. After its 1996 revival debut in New York, and over 10 000 performances later, "Chicago" continues to entertain millions of people around the world - it is the fourth longest-running musical on Broadway and the West-End, has been seen worldwide by over 12-million people. Produced in 261 cities in many different languages, the show has won over 50 international awards. It also spawned an Academy Award-winning film, starring Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Richard Gere. "Chicago" is brought to South Africa by Investec and will be produced by Hazel Feldman of Showtime Management. The show will open at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre on 26 April for a limited season.
