Focus on life in the city

April 6, 2004

By Chandrea Gerber

A COLLECTION of images and stories that documents, investigates, and celebrates life in different communities in the city, the Urban Life group exhibition at the Johannesburg Art Gallery charts the development of South Africa's democracy.

Delving into thought processes and social lives of Joburg residents, the students have taken a year to explore facets like public life, private life, fashion, tradition, sexuality, sport and identity.

Periodically edited in groups by professional photographers like Andrew Tshabangu, Sally Gaule and Cedric Nunn, the exhibition adds credence to the reputation of the Market Photography Workshop, an institute that has helped focus South African photographers and visual poets for 15 years.

By offering short courses for beginner, intermediate and advanced students, the Market Photography Workshop endeavours to ensure that visual literacy reaches the neglected and marginalised groups in society.

Exhibits include "Out of Focus" by Buyaphi Mdledle, who looks at soccer through the eyes and emotions of the spectator; Carina Booysens' "Scenes from a car", which explores our perception of the landscape while driving around the city, and Ingrid Masondo's "Split Ends", which is all about urban hairstyles.

The Urban Life group exhibition opened on Sunday 4 April and will run until 9 May. Thereafter, each artist will display their selected theme exhibits in their own right. These exhibits will be viewable at different times from 16 May until 28 December.

Entrance to the exhibition is free. For more information, contact the Johannesburg Art Gallery on 011 725 3130. The gallery, on King George Street, Joubert Park, is open from 10am to 5pm from Tuesday to Sunday.
