Council approves
proposed tariff increases

April 30, 2004

By Jonews reporter

THE City of Johannesburg on Thursday endorsed proposed increases in tariffs, averaging 6.8 percent across the board, and ratepayers have been urged to raise objections before they are cast in stone.

Council is legally obliged to review tariffs annually in terms of the Municipal Systems Act 32 of 2000 as well as allow residents to participate in the process. Members of the public will be able to register their objections at a series of public meetings to be convened this month in the build-up to the mayor's budget speech, which will be delivered on 30 June.

The proposed increases are as follows:

  • Assessment rates 8.5%
  • Electricity (domestic) 9%
  • Water and sanitation 9%
  • Refuse collection 5.5%

Increases in electricity tariffs are subject to approval from the National Electricity Regulator.

"Over the next 30 days, residents will have the opportunity of commenting on the proposed increases verbally or in writing. We encourage residents to do so because their input is taken seriously and will be considered in line with the City's capital expenditure," said Parks Tau, the councillor responsible for Finance and Economic Development in the city.

Virgil James, spokesman for the city, said ratepayers can also address their comments on the proposed tariff increases to: The City Manager, P O Box 1049, Johannesburg 2000. Written submissions can also be dropped off at any of the Peoples Centres in the city, James said.
