Shilowa to celebrate
in style at Newtown

April 26, 2004

By Lucky Sindane

THE only provincial premier to be reappointed for a further five-year term of office following the third democratic elections, Gauteng premier Mbhazima Shilowa, plans to celebrate his re-election in style - with a monster bash at the Newtown Cultural Precinct on Thursday 29 April.

Shilowa was sworn-in as premier at the Gauteng Legislature on Monday 26 April. During his acceptance speech Shilowa promised: "Together we will overcome all the challenges that stand before us and make Gauteng a much better place in which to live."

Shilowa will repeat the oath of office during the Newtown celebrations. "This is the very first time Newtown will host such an event and we expect thousands of people," said Gauteng spokesperson, Joseph Mohajane.

The event, during which Shilowa will be officially inaugurated as premier, forms part of the province's 10th anniversary of democracy celebrations and will start at the Mary Fitzgerald Square at 9am.

Dignitaries and representatives from communities from all over Gauteng have been invited to witness the inauguration. "There will be lots of entertainment including artists like Mdu Masilela, Phuzekhemisi, Vuyo Mokoena and many more," said Mohajane.

Roads around Mary Fitzgerald Square will be closed from 8.30am to 3.30pm.
