THE long overdue move of the Johannesburg Metro Police Department headquarters (JPMD) to a more worker-friendly environment with ample office space, strict security, boardrooms, and a conference room has begun.
Since the JMPD was formed in March 2001, its headquarters has had to share space with its Selby precinct offices. This meant that the headquarters component, which deals with policies, procedures and standards, and development of corporate strategies, was not separated from the day-to-day operations of the JMPD.
A more worker-friendly environment for JMPD
"The offices at Selby were not in a state that was conducive for working. The place was cramped and there were as many as three secretaries sharing one office," explained director of the Office of Chief of Police, Elwin Pelser.
The new premises initially belonged to electronics company Phillips, which, after downgrading, sold a portion of it to the Johannesburg Property Company who in turn allocated it to the JMPD.
The two-storey building situated along Main Road in Martindale is easily identified by the blue JMPD headquarters signage and tinted glass windows which stretch across the front of the building up to the second floor.
However, relocation of the headquarters will only be complete by the end of next year. "We decided to undertake the move with a phase-by-phase approach. It would not have been feasible for everyone to move at the same time," said Pelser.
So far the Office of the Chief of Police, the director of the Office of the Chief of Police and the chairperson of the Public Safety Portfolio committee have taken up occupancy at Martindale. Among the departments still to move are the Joint Tactical Command Centre, and the directors of human resources and legal processes.
The headquarters building now also has a canteen, parking space for employees and visitors, as well as facilities for meetings and conferences. Security is tight and access cards electronically control entry to the two floors and visitors are not permitted to walk around unaccompanied.
"These new offices are a definite investment for the future. The JMPD is not going anywhere; it is only going to get better," enthused Pelser.
