Letsema campaign
in Diepkloof

THE satisfied young Soweto faces told it all - the live appearance of their favourite TV cartoon character dishing out prizes ensured the Letsema project day on Wednesday was one they would never forget.

The event, hosted by Minister of Public Service and Administration, Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi, was part of the Letsema project which government has undertaken to encourage volunteerism within the public service and to foster community development and upliftment.

The project, which was started four years ago by President Thabo Mbeki and falls under Fraser-Moleketi's ministry, is aimed at assisting identified service delivery institutions around Diepkloof; namely the clinics and police station, with filing and cleaning, according to project organiser Madoda Mxakwe.

Wednesday's event, held at the Diepkloof Hall, saw hundreds of tiny tots from pre-schools in the area turned up in green, orange and yellow t-shirts donated by SABC2.

Excitement reigned as Dub, an SABC2 cartoon character, greeted them in seven of South Africa's languages and kept them in stitches with his stage antics.

Dub also held question-and-answer sessions and hoop-la competitions for the children and many were rewarded with Dub satchels and teddy bears.

After a "Dubadacious" show, Fraser-Moleketi, who is patron of Toys of Africa, distributed thousands of toys donated by Daimler Chrysler South Africa and the children were given picnic parcels, which they made short work of on the lawns outside the hall. Big stomachs had plenty of chances to go for refills.

A pleased Fraser-Moloketi said after the show: "This government has promised to deliver essential services to its citizens. As national and provincial government we are committed to ensuring a better life for all our citizens."
