SOME 25 hectares of prime real estate in Fairland, and owned by the City of Johannesburg, is set to be sold to individuals and companies by public tender.
The Jerusalem site, located at the intersection of Beyers Naude Drive and the N1 Western Bypass, has now been released for mixed development.
According to a Johannesburg Property Company (JPC) advertisement, individuals and companies who are interested in the site should present proposals clearly indicating the description of the developments they intend to erect.
"The site has been designated for office, retail and institutional use, of which 14 hectares have been set aside for office park development and two hectares for retail development such as shops. Seven hectares are expected to be set aside for institutional use, like schools," said JPC project manager, Allan Dinnie.
Dinnie said that the prime piece of land had already attracted much interest from potential developers, adding that its location would provide good investment returns while creating much-needed job opportunities.
The JPC plans to guide all developments on the site to ensure that they meet with requirements laid down by the company.
The Jerusalem site was once a popular venue amongst religious sects who used it for church services - hence the name. The churches had recently vacated the site to make way for the proposed developments, said Dinnie.
The proposed developments will also put an end to motor-cycle racing activities on the site, a popular pastime. One racing patron, Harold Smith, seemed resolute about the decision. "At the moment I have no idea where I will find an immediate place. In the meantime, I will make do with what is available."
Incorporated in 2000, JPC is a private company assigned to manage and develop the immovable property portfolios of the City and its utilities, agencies and corporatised entities.
Application documents for the tender process are available at the information desk of the offices of the Johannesburg Property Company, 9th floor, Braamfontein Centre.
