AUDIENCES are in for a royal treat as the King Size Comedy Breakout takes to the stage at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre for five nights, from 24 September to 28 September.
Established in 2000, the belly-heaving event has hosted a number of successful comedy jams, capturing the imagination of a growing audience of comedy fans throughout the country.
Host Alex Jay, a pioneer of comedy on the airwaves, is pleased the entertainment genre is moving into the mainstream. "I started playing comedy on the air from the very beginning of my radio career, then I shifted my emphasis to South African comedy."
Why the move to local laughter? "Is it because our comedians are world class? Or because the topics are more relevant to us? Or is it that our vibrant, changing society needs many voices to be heard in order for us to understand each other better and to find more areas of commonality?" The answer, Jay says, is an unequivocal yes to all the questions.
The King Size Comedy Breakout Festival will showcase the best of South African comedic talent, Jay adds.
The belly laughs begin on 24 September with Classic Nite, featuring legendary comedians Joe Parker, Cyril Green, Eddie Eksteen, Mel Miller and Billy Prince.
The Thursday 25 September show - An Evening with Barry Hilton - has already been sold out and the organisers have arranged another show on Sunday 28 September at 3pm. Zany Hilton, "your cousin", is supported by Tony King.
The finest of South Africa's young fresh comedic talent take to the stage from 26 September to 28 September in Heavyweight Comedy. Audiences will split their sides at performances by John Vlismas, Mark Banks, David Kau, Melanie Jones, Riaad Moosa, Al Prodgers and Chris Forrest.
Tickets are available from Computicket from R75 to R175.
