It's time for
'Jazz on the Lake'

September 17, 2003

By Bongani Majola

TRADITIONALLY held during the first weekend of September, this year the annual "Jazz on the Lake" picnic, featuring some of the best local sounds around, will be held on Sunday 21 September at Zoo Lake.

Organised by the Arts Alive International Festival, and sponsored by the City of Johannesburg, the annual "Jazz on the Lake" picnic is one of the highlights on Joburg's spring calendar.

This year's event has an impressive line up, including Musa Manzini, Andile Yenana, Marcus Wyatt, McCoy Mrubata, Tamara Dey, Mara Louw, the Ochrim School of Music, the Stix Hojeng and McJays Jazz Band.

"Jazz on the Lake" is an event for the whole family, say organisers, and audiences flock to the lake, laden with food baskets, blankets and umbrellas. People will not be allowed to bring their own alcohol, says event publicist Bridget van Oerle. A beer tent and food court will be available.

The date of the picnic has been pushed to later in the month to allow organisers to consolidate their preparations. "There will be high-level security," says Van Oerle.

"To ensure safety and proper control, barricades in and around the Zoo Lake area will be manned by Parkview and Rosebank police, assisted by the Johannesburg metro police," Van Oerle adds. Barricades will be extended to the M1 highway to include Killarney and Riveria.

Festival-goers are encouraged to use the free park and ride services provided by Johannesburg Metro Bus. Buses will be leaving from the Johannesburg Civic Theatre in Braamfontein, Marks Park in Emmerentia and James and Ethel Gray Park in Birdhaven.

Gates open at 10am and the concert begins an hour later.

Road closures
An event of this magnitude means that traffic in the Parkview Zoo Lake area will be affected during the free concert, which takes place from 11am to 5pm.

To ensure the safety of both residents and festival-goers, the organisers have been granted permission by the City of Johannesburg and the Metro Police to close some roads as well as barricade certain areas.

There are 31 roads which will be closed in the following suburbs: Forest Town, Greenside, Parktown, Parkview, Parkwood, Rosebank, Saxonwold and Westcliff.

Residents, who live within the barricaded area, will receive two permits per household as well as a map indicating where the security will be applied. These must be collected from either Parkview or Rosebank police stations. A limited number of permits will also be available at local churches. Residents must have an ID document and electricity account in their possession when collecting the passes.

Permit queries can be made to:

  • Captain. Van der Merwe SAPS Parkview (011) 486 5050
  • Inspector Bezuidenhout SAPS Rosebank (011) 778 4715
