THE Hillbrow recreation centre will be holding a double celebration this weekend - its 17th birthday and Heritage Day.
Daylong festivities will be held on 20 September from 9am to 3pm, with a variety of activities. Included in the line-up are drama performances, exhibitions, traditional dancing, ballroom dancing and sporting events. Sports fanatics can look forward to boxing and karate demonstrations, badminton, chess, snooker, morabaraba and other indoor games.
The festivities promise to be loads of fun for the family. "We expect about 400 people during the open day, with half participating in different sporting activities," says centre manager, Sharon Koikoi.
A "best dressed" competition will also be held and participants are encouraged to wear traditional dress in keeping with the spirit of Heritage Day.
"We want to encourage people to visit the centre, because many people are not aware of the activities available at the centre," says Koikoi. Staff "are committed to working towards providing and extending the centre activities to every citizen", she adds.
The Hillbrow recreation centre is located at the corner of King George and Pretoria streets, Hillbrow. For more information contact Sheron Koikoi on 011 643 5214 or 072 391 0489.
