THE City of Johannesburg has implemented an interim plan to help the more than 200 Alexandra families whose shacks burnt down in a fire this week.
The homeless families will receive help in rebuilding their houses, be provided with shelter and food, and be given blankets.
The fire was believed to been caused by an unattended paraffin stove, according to emergency management services spokesperson Malcolm Midgley.
About 100 City officials joined volunteers from local NGOs in clearing the debris between London Road and 5th Avenue. Work will continue on the site for the next few days, said City official Buti Lesiela, one of the officials helping out. "The area is still been cleared up and rebuilding will begin as soon as that is completed," Lesiela added.
"People who lost their houses and possessions have been settled in tents and containers as a temporary measure, with senior citizens, children and women treated with priority."
Emergency relief in the form of food and blankets had been provided, Lesiela added.
