Teachers get a day to play

October 3, 2003

By Tammy O'Reilly

TEACHERS around Gauteng will celebrate World Teachers Day on Sunday 5 October with a day of singing, dancing, and indigenous games at the Johannesburg Stadium.

The Gauteng Department of Education has organised the fun event to honour the work done by educators in South Africa.

The day will begin at 6am with a 16km fun/run walk from Bezuidenhout Park to Johannesburg Stadium, where the festivities will take place.

Activities kick off with an aerobics session in preparation for the indigenous games to follow. Then the teachers will cool down with some choral music and performances by singers Vicky Sampson and Dr Victor and the Rasta Rebels.

Although the worldwide theme this year is "Opening doors to a better world", the Gauteng Department of Education decided to adopt their own slogan, "Teaching - the profession that gives birth to all other professions".

Deputy director of communications for the Gauteng Department of Education, Sam Matsaneng, said: "We will be embracing the world theme but at the same time we have chosen our own."

Minister of Education Kader Asmal, Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa and representatives from various teacher unions are expected to address the gathering.

"For the first time all teacher unions will be represented on one platform giving a message of support to educators," said Matsaneng.

According to the organisers, 30 000 teachers have been invited to the fun-day and transport has been arranged to enable participants from all over the province to attend.

"It is fitting that a day be set aside to honour the sterling work of educators," Matsaneng added.
