IT'S official: The city of Johannesburg has been voted the most popular destination for most South Africans.
This is the finding of the Sunday Times-Markinor top brands survey for the year 2003 announced on Thursday evening.
The findings are based on interviews conducted with 3 498 respondents, 2 000 of whom are based in metropolitan areas.
Now in its 11th year, the Markinor brands survey measures the popularity of brands for the benefit of business, investors and the general public.
A new category of the most popular town or city in South Africa was introduced for the first time this year.
"We are very happy about the award and it was unexpected. This shows that we have a good marketing strategy", said City of Johannesburg Director marketing and Tourism, Mandy Jean Woods.
The survey also revealed that South Africans are divided along racial lines in terms of their preferred cities. Although both Johannesburg and Cape Town were rated highly by most respondents, Johannesburg was a lot more popular with black South Africans, who considered it to be the best city in the country. Cape Town, by contrast was a city of choice for whites, coloureds and a fair number of Indians.
Durban came out a distant third, mentioned mainly by Indians and also some blacks and whites.
"Our leadership is the best in the country and we are working towards making our city a world class city in Africa", said Woods.
We are going to keep on doing the great job and we are planning to launch a civic pride campaign very soon, said Woods.
