IT was fitting to host an exhibition of graphics depicting the political landscape, both locally and in the UK, at a time when South Africa was celebrating 10 years of democracy.
This observation was made by the executive director of tourism of the Business Council of South Africa Dr Tanya Abraham, who opened the Upfront and Personal - three decades of political graphics exhibition at the Johannesburg Art Gallery on Wednesday.
The exhibition depicts a wide range of political graphics from recent South African and British history.
"We can see history through graphics," Abrahams said, adding it was fitting to host such an exhibition "at a time when South Africa is about to celebrate 10 years of democracy".
Other crucial issues, like the abuse against women and HIV/Aids, were also depicted in the show. "This exhibition is a reflection of the issues we have to deal with," she said.
Upfront and Personal, commissioned by the British Council in partnership with the Johannesburg Art Gallery, the South African National Gallery, Iziko Museums and the Durban Gallery, will be on at the Johannesburg Art Gallery until 2 November.
"The exhibition will hopefully excite, amuse, challenge, provoke but ultimately also inspire anyone viewing it," said British Council representative, Jean September.
"Its main aim is to highlight the vibrant, challenging and important role civil societies continue to play in giving articulate, creative and sometimes humorous expression to the ideals and spirit of democracy and human rights culture," she added.
