MECs talk to
Joburg residents

October 29, 2003

By Bontle Moeng

GAUTENG Premier Mbhazima Shilowa and a number of MECs will visit several communities around Johannesburg today as part of the province's "Let's Talk" campaign.

The "Let's Talk" programme, initiated in 1999, was set up to allow citizens to talk directly to members of the provincial government. "We want to promote public participation," says Gauteng spokesperson Joseph Mohajane.

The Joburg road show starts in Kanana, near Weiler's Farm south of Johannesburg, at 3.30pm, with an address by Shilowa.

One of the key issues the premier intends to raise is to urge residents to register for next year's national elections. Two days have been set aside for voter registration, 8 November and 9 November, and citizens are asked to make sure they have the necessary identity documents.

During the "Let's Talk" programme, the Department of Home Affairs will issue IDs to local residents who have applied for, but not collected, the documents.

Several meetings will take place today:

At 3:30pm

  • Premier Mbhazima Shilowa will be at Kanana, Weilers Farm Community Hall, south of Johannesburg.

At 5pm

  • MEC Khabisi Mosunkutu will be at the Chris Hani Community Hall, Weilers Farm, south of Johannesburg.
  • MEC Ignatius Jacobs will address residents at the Finetown Primary School, Finetown, south of Johannesburg.
  • MEC Nomvula Mokonyane will be at the Muzomuhle Primary School, Extension 2, Diepsloot.

At 6pm

  • MEC Mary Metcalfe will talk at the Lord Khanyile Community Hall, next to Ivory Park Stadium, Ivory Park, near Midrand.
  • MEC Trevor Fowler will be at the San Kopano Centre, corner of Selbourne and 12th avenues, Alexandra.
  • MEC Gwen Ramokgopa will be at the Ipelegeng Community Centre, corner of Khumalo and Phera streets, White City Jabavu, Soweto.
  • MEC Angie Motshekga will address residents at the Orlando East Community Hall, Mooki Street, Orlando East, Soweto.

At 6.30pm

  • MEC Paul Mashatile will be at the Phiri Community Hall, Mabhalane Street, Phiri, Soweto.
  • Premier Mbhazima Shilowa will be at the Hoerskool President, Rifle Range Road, Ridgeway.
