Free health assessment
in Rosettenville

October 24, 2003

By Bontle Moeng

THE City of Johannesburg is urging residents to take time to have regular health check ups.

"Many people are unaware then may be suffering from a life threatening disease and should take the time to get a medical assessment," said Region 9 regional manager for health, Oupa Montsioa.

With this in mind the Region 9 health department has joined forces with a pharmacy in Rosettenville to offer residents free health assessments today, 24 October, and tomorrow, 25 October.

Residents in the southern suburbs of the city will be able to have various tests done: cholesterol; blood pressure; blood sugar; blood group type; eye screenings; and a test for glaucoma.

Tests will be carried out at Centro Pharmacy in Centro Continental, Shop U25 Albert Street in Rosettenville until 4pm today and from 9am to 1pm tomorrow.

"There are so many people who cannot afford to have these important tests and as a result are not aware of their health status," said owner of Centro Pharmacy, Arthur Tannous.

It would cost at least R1 000 to have all six tests done at a laboratory, he added.

This is the eighth year that Centro Pharmacy has worked with Region 9 to offer this community service, according to a statement from Region 9's health department. In 2002 more than 4 000 tests were undertaken.

The joint project was also aimed at educating Johannesburg residents. During the tests, advice will also be given about family planning, muscle-building and healthy lifestyles options for men and women. Experts will answer questions on all types of medication such as homeopathic, naturopathic and traditional.

"As we are approaching World Aids Day a lot of information and advice will be given out about the pandemic in order to enhance awareness," said Montsioa.

For a free health assessment, visit Centro Pharmacy at Centro Continental, Shop U25 Albert Street, Rosettenville or call Arthur Tannous on 011 435 0292 for more information.
